It involves writing about real events, people, or ideas, conveying a message through the use of literary techniques.
The work should be accessible to a general reading audience (not written for a specialized or academic audience).

For the 2023 Island Literary Awards, the PEI Writers' Guild has made our identity-based award categories barrier-free in order to create equitable opportunities for individuals of marginalized backgrounds.
These categories include the:
If you identify as Indigenous, Black, Francophone, 2SLGBTQ+, or under the criteria described under the Newcomer to Canada Award, you can apply for those awards at no additional cost to you.
Please note that you can submit to multiple categories (for example, if you are Black and identify as 2SLGBTQ+, you can submit to the Scott Parsons Award as well as the 2SLGBTQ+ Award). Applying for any additional award category does not disqualify you from winning multiple awards.

The Francophone Award is presented in recognition and celebration of the outstanding literary merit of a Francophone Prince Edward Island writer.

The 2SLGBTQ+ Award is presented in recognition and celebration of the outstanding literary merit of a 2SLGBTQ+ Island writer.
This prize is designed to recognize literary merit and promote works in all categories including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, writing for children and young adults, plays and scriptwriting.
This prize is open to PEI residents who identify as 2SLGBTQ+.

*FORMATTING NOTES*EACH entry must include the following: 1. The online submission form must be filled out entirely. No identifying information entered on the form will be shared with the jurors.2. A title page that lists only the title of the entry and, if desired, an author’s note. The appearance of the author’s name(s) or other identification on the entry shall DISQUALIFY THE ENTRY. 3. Entries are to be typed, in 12-point font, with one-inch margins, and double-spaced (except for poetry).4. Pages MUST be numbered, with the title of the work on each page. 5. Nous avons apporté quelques changements à nos catégories de prix cette année! Les catégories principales suivantes restent les mêmes :
La PEI Writers' Guild a toutefois facilité l'accès aux catégories fondées sur l'identité. Ainsi, les personnes qui s'identifient comme étant autochtones, noires, francophones ou membres de la communauté 2SLGBTQ+ peuvent soumettre leur candidature aux prix correspondants sans avoir à payer de frais supplémentaires.
Veuillez également noter qu'il est possible de soumettre sa candidature à plus d'une catégorie. Par exemple, si vous êtes une personne noire qui est aussi membre de la communauté 2SLGBTQ+, vous pouvez présenter une demande pour le prix littéraire Scott Parsons ainsi que pour le prix 2SLGBTQ+. Le fait de soumettre votre candidature à une catégorie de prix supplémentaire ne vous empêchera pas de pouvoir gagner plus d'un prix.
