The PEI Writers’ Guild is pleased to announce a new writing workshop led by award-winning author Anne Emery, which will take place on October 13 in Charlottetown and which focuses on villains, specifically, how to write a really good one … or a bad one, as the case may be.

Entitled Villains: The Characters We Love to Hate, Anne Emery will lead participants in a day-long workshop, exploring the factors that contribute to what makes a villain engaging and how villains can be used to drive a story narrative. Participants will define what they enjoy in a villain, sharing villains in their own stories, and will have the opportunity to create new villains based on the material covered in the workshop.

Anne Emery is the author of Sign of the Cross (2006), Obit (2007), Barrington Street Blues (2008), Cecilian Vespers (2009), Children in the Morning (2010), Death at Christy Burke’s (2011), Blood on a Saint (2013), Ruined Abbey (2015), and Lament for Bonnie (2016).

She won a silver medal in the 2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards (international competition), and the 2011 Dartmouth Book Award for Fiction, both for Children in the Morning, and the 2007 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel for Sign of the Cross.

Anne was born in Halifax and grew up in Moncton. She is a graduate of St. F.X. University and Dalhousie Law School. She has worked as a lawyer, legal affairs reporter and researcher. Anne lives in Halifax with her husband and daughter.
