Events for October

There are plenty of events for writers to enjoy this month. Check out this list!

October 7, Poetry Workshop, Confederation Centre Public Library, 7 p.m.: NY poet Mary O’Keefe Brady will examine the techniques poets use to achieve musical language: alliteration, slant rhyme, internal rhyme, repetition, and other effects. The workshop is free. Please call the library at 902-368-4642 to register.

October 8, Open Mic, Confederation Centre Public Library, 7 p.m.: Want to read your poetry or prose in public? Join the centre’s open mic. Not interested in speaking? Come along and listen. Participants are asked to keep speaking time to five minutes. Readers can sign up beginning at 6:30 or in advance by calling the library.

October 8, Playwrights’ Cabaret, Local 343 restaurant, 98 Water St., 7 p.m.: Come celebrate the work of Island playwrights! The cabaret is hosted by the P.E.I. wing of PARC (Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre). The space is open at 6:30 p.m., with complimentary finger foods and cash bar. Come listen to readings by talented playwrights, including Jeff Bursey, Marlane O’Brien, Marjorie Hooper Dalziel, Kathleen Hamilton, Steven Mayoff, Rob MacLean and Melissa Mullen, Malcolm Murray, J.J. Steinfeld, and Laurel Smyth. Admission is by donation.

October 9, PARC Information Session, Local 343 restaurant, 10 a.m.: Enjoy light snacks and learn about the role the Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre (PARC) plays in the P.E.I. play-writing community. Organizers want to hear your input, wisdom, experience, criticism, humour and whatever else you might bring to the discussion. To find out more about PARC, visit www.playwrightsatlantic.ca. October 14, Poet Laureate’s Open Mic Series, Baha’i Faith Charlottetown Centre, 20 Lapthorn Ave., 7 p.m.: This marks the beginning of the fall season of open mics hosted by P.E.I. Poet Laureate Dianne Hicks Morrow. Now in partnership with the P.E.I. Writers’ Guild and TWiG (The Writers in Group), open mics take place the second Wednesday of every month at the new venue of the Baha’i Centre. The venue is wheelchair accessible and alcohol-free. The featured reader this month is Patti Larsen, an award-winning writer with a passion for the paranormal. Readers can sign up to read poetry or prose for three to five minutes. October 16, Book Launch by Dianne Hicks Morrow, The Chapel at the Mount, 141 Mt. Edward Rd., 6:30 p.m.: Join Hicks Morrow to celebrate the launch of Fixing Up the Farmhouse: Forty Years of Living, Loving and Lamenting. The event includes a reading and book signing. All are welcome.
