Hearing Voices: Writing in Character with Brent MacLaine
Arguably, all writing comes from the self. However, writing also requires our imaginations to leap into and inhabit the bodies and souls of other beings, whether they be human, animal, extra-terrestrial, fantastical, abstract, or even inanimate. If we do this effectively, the voice that emerges can be both distinctive and engaging, a voice that speaks dramatically as an other. This workshop will explore different kinds of character voices and explain how to achieve character voices through, including techniques such as interior and voiced monologue, dialogue, tone, diction, vocabulary, and register. Participants will be engaged in a practice writing session including peer edit and group response. Writers of all genres and of all levels of experience are welcome.
Admission for workshops is $20 for the general public, $10 for students, $15 for members of the PEI Writers Guild. Please pre-register by emailing peiwritersguild@gmail.com
